Kdrama Review: Idol I

Although I’ve been watching K-dramas since 2022, this is the very first time I’ve felt compelled to sit down and write a review. For some reason, Idol I was the drama that finally pushed me to do it — and after finishing it, I think I understand why.

Idol I is a 12-episode series, with each episode running just over an hour. It’s currently available on Netflix, though I personally watched it on Rakuten Viki.

The story centers on Maeng Se Na (Choi Soo-young), a highly capable lawyer known for taking on difficult cases — and winning them. Outside the courtroom, however, she has a secret: she’s a devoted fan of the K-pop group Gold Boys. Her two worlds collide dramatically when she wakes up one morning to shocking news — her favorite idol, Do La Ik (Kim Jae-young), has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

From there, the drama unfolds into a tense and layered mystery. Each episode peels back new details, not only about the case itself but also about the personal struggles of its characters. Very early on, it becomes clear that La Ik is hiding something deeper, and as the story progresses, viewers discover that Se Na and La Ik share a past that only one of them fully remembers.

The supporting cast also adds depth to the narrative. Characters like Hong Hye-joo, an ex tied to the past, and prosecutor Kwak Byeong-gyeon bring their own conflicts and motivations, making the story feel richer and more unpredictable.

What stood out most to me was the suspense. Just when I thought I had figured out the truth behind the murder, the drama proved me wrong. Idol I kept me constantly guessing and completely invested. In fact, I finished the entire series in just five days — and only because I tried (unsuccessfully) to limit myself to two episodes a night.

Overall, Idol I is a compelling mix of legal drama, mystery, and character-driven storytelling. If you enjoy shows that keep you guessing while also delivering emotional depth, this one is definitely worth adding to your watchlist.

Have you watched Idol I? Did you manage to figure out the killer before the reveal? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
