If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know I’ve been getting a little crafty recently. This is quite a new thing for me, as I’ve never really had a particularly artsy side or creative urge. However, when the idea of bedazzling sunglasses for a hen do I was helping to plan came up, I ran with it.
Did I have some regrets while spending hours gluing tiny gems onto sunglasses? Absolutely. Would I still do it again knowing what I know now? 100%.
I genuinely enjoyed getting stuck into this project, and seeing all the hens happy with their glasses made the effort completely worth it. I honestly now understand why people sell handmade crafts—the joy on someone’s face when they receive something you’ve made (or bedazzled!) is such a great feeling.
Now, I’m not saying I’ll be doing this kind of thing all the time… but I definitely wouldn’t rule out another crafty project in the future.
The aim of this post is to share exactly what I used, how long it took, and whether I’d do anything differently. So let’s get into it—starting with the supplies.
Supplies
- Sunglasses
- Silicone brushes
- B6000 glue
- Fine-point tweezers
- Phone or tablet stand
- Bracelet-making letters (I used both plain black and colourful ones)
- Gems, pearls, and other decorative items
- Diamond painting gem tool
- Something to protect your work surface (I used a placemat)
That’s everything I used to create these glasses. One thing I’d really recommend when buying your gems or decorations: get more than you think you’ll need—way more. I thought I had far too many, but I ended up using nearly all of them.
Your decorative pieces don’t need to be uniform in size either. In fact, using a mix of sizes lets you create a gradient effect, which I personally loved.
The Method
I split this project into two main stages
.
Part One: Planning & Lettering
The first step was planning where the names would go and sticking the letters onto the glasses. I used a phone stand to hold the sunglasses in place, which made things much easier.
Tweezers were definitely the best tool for placing the letters, and I alternated between applying glue directly to the glasses and to the letters themselves.
To keep the names looking neat and centred, I found the middle letter of each name and lined that up with the dip in the frame. It made everything look much more uniform.
Although the glue dried fairly quickly, I chose to leave the glasses overnight before moving on to the next stage—just to be safe.
Part Two: Bedazzling
I won’t sugar-coat it—this part was long, repetitive, and at times a bit tedious. But the end result made it completely worth it.
I worked in small sections, using silicone brushes to apply glue to the glasses. Then I used either the diamond painting tool or tweezers (depending on the size of the gem) to place each piece.
Having a mix of gem sizes really helped here, as I could adjust and fill spaces more naturally depending on the area I was working on.
As I went along, I definitely got more confident—not just with placement, but with the whole process. The repetition actually helped, and by the time I got to the final pair, I barely had to think about what I was doing. I would then leave the glasses again overnight to fully dry.
Final Thoughts
In total, I bedazzled 14 pairs of sunglasses. Our bride-to-be actually received two pairs—one for the hen party and another for the wedding day, which felt like a nice extra touch.
I made sure to split the workload into smaller batches of 4–5 pairs at a time, rather than trying to tackle everything in one go. Each evening, I spent around one to two hours working on them, and overall this took me about five days to complete. The lettering stage was definitely the quicker part of the process.
One thing I was really pleased about is that none of the gems fell off—at least not while the party was in full swing, which felt like a win!
Overall, I genuinely enjoyed this craft and would absolutely consider doing it again. In terms of what I’d change, I wouldn’t alter the process itself, as that worked really well for me. However, I would probably invest in a better stand specifically designed to hold sunglasses. The phone stand did the job, but something more suited to the task would have made things easier.
The only other thing I’d do differently is organise individual bags for each pair after bedazzling, just to keep them safe and protected. In the end, I stored them back in their original packaging, which worked—but it wasn’t ideal
